Robert Cresanti, the Undersecretary of the Department of Commerce(DoC), U.S.A paid a visit to the NIA on Wednesday. Mr. Cresanti is came to Korea to participate in the Asia Innovation Forum 2007, which was held on Tuesday. While in Korea the Underscretary plans to meet with various private and public sector representatives and discuss ways of cooperation in the area of RFID and other advanced technologies.
Underscretary Cresanti is in charge of technology related matter in the DoC and also heads the inter-governmental RFID Council.
A meeting was held within the NIA building, and was attended by President Chang-Kon Kim, vice-president Jong-sung Hwang, vice-president Sang-Chul Shin, and director Jeongwon Yoon from the NIA, and Undersecretary Cresanti and the Senior Advisor to the Underscretary Harold Pyon from the DoC.
The NIA is in charge of implementing various RFID pilot projects and the meeting provided an excellent opportunity for the delegates from the DoC to learn and share experiences on RFID.
During the meeting, director Yoon gave gave a brief presentation on the RFID implementation in Korea, where he explained the work done by the NIA on RFID including various RFID/USN pilot projects that are being carried out as well as the soon to be built Songdo u-IT cluster.
Mr. Cresanti showed a keen interest in the RFID/USN pilot projects and the Songdo cluster. He expressed his concerns about ensuring interoperability among the differing RFID systems that are being adopted, and talked about the experiences of the U.S in this area. He also praised Korea's efforts to promote and deploy RFID systems, and added that Korea is well ahead of most of the world in the RFID area.
