National Computerization Agency (President Kim, Chang Kon, www.nca.or.kr), or NCA, held Management Innovation Conference for First Half of 2006 on July 7 at the main office of Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business in Yeouido, Seoul.

The conference was held to examine achievements in the area of management innovation that had been pursued vigorously since the inauguration of NCA incumbent President Kim, Chang Kon in 2005 and to seek the direction for future management innovation. Also included on the agenda were lectures by specialists to enhance the innovative mind of all NCA executives and employees, and an awarding session for excellent innovation cases.

The conference started with an evaluation of last year's management and an analysis of innovation assessment results. Later in the morning, plans for innovation across the organization and results were announced. The afternoon session centered on innovation performance by each division and team, and plans for the latter half of 2006. In addition, participants discussed what strategy and action plans should be established to ensure NCA's emergence as an agency specializing in knowledge information services centering on customers based on the analysis of customer monitoring results compiled in the first half of 2006.

At the recent evaluation of management performance of governmental agencies for the year of 2005 conducted by the Ministry of Planning and Budget, NCA ranked the second among 16 industry-related agencies, thus was designated as one of the two excellent agencies (the title is given only to two agencies that ranked the highest and the second highest). In terms of score, the agency received 82.88, which was the highest among all agencies under the Ministry of Information and Communication. As for the stage of innovation, the agency was found to be in the stage of generating outcome of innovation activities, or the fourth stage of the total six stages of innovation, suggesting that innovation has become an institution within NCA.

We have set the entry into the fifth stage of innovation, 'the starting point of making innovation activities part of daily business,' as our goal in 2006 and is establishing mid- to long-term plans for management innovation through the operation of 'Innovation Supporters,' a group consisting of innovation specialists, explained Ryu, Gwang Taek, Leader of Management Innovation Team at NCA. As part of such efforts, 37 innovation challenges and 55 independent innovation challenges are being implemented at the agency level and at the team level, respectively, which are led by 32 NCA innovators.

NIA President Kim said, This conference is meaningful because not only did it provide an opportunity to share the agency's achievements in innovation but it also allowed all members of NCA to have a consensus that innovation is urgently needed and to keep the understanding in our minds. In the second half of this year, we will accelerate management innovation even further through setting up an organization dedicated solely to innovation.
