The National Information Society Agency(NIA) announced to have commercialized the RFID(Radio Frequency Identification)-based airline baggage tracking service for Korea's Asiana Airlines in 11 airports of Korea. An opening ceremony was held to commemorate the launch of this new service on February 27, 2008, where the President Chang Kon Kim of the NIA, President Geun Pyo Lee of Korea Airports Corporation, the Vice-Chairman Chan Bup Park of Asiana Airlines were in attendance.

This new service is an important part of creating an u-Airport, and it was promoted as part of the u-IT Lead Project launched in 2007 by the NIA. Through this new service, a RFID tag is attached to individual baggage instead of bar codes to track transportation from the baggage check-in stage to baggage claim at the final destination. As a result of this project, Asiana Airlines can now manage transport and delivery of baggages accurately.

The application of RFID technology has paved a way for solutions to the recurrent problem of faulty baggage management in airlines and airport operation. Airports in other countries such as the U.S. and Hong Kong are preparing to launch these types of services as well. The RFID-based airline baggage tracking service is expected to cut down the expenses for the reimbursement of baggage mishandling and damages.
In addition to this service, the NIA plans to conduct studies on more u-service models that can enhance competitiveness in industries and other social fields using new u-IT(ubiquitous information technology).
