Peru Information Access Center Opened

NIA’s President, Seang-Tae Kim was in Lima, Peru on March 17th to take part in the official opening of the Korea-Peru Information Access Center (IAC). The Information Access Center was established in Colegio Mayor, Centro Vacacional Huampani, Peru. At the inaugural official opening ceremony, dignitaries from Peru took part, including Peruvian President, Alan García, Enrique Cornejo Ramirez, Minister of Transportation and Communication, Jose Antonio Chang Escobedo, Minister of Education, Jaime Honores, Director General of the National Office of e-Government and Information (ONGEI) and Carlos Pando Sanchez, Director General of the Peru Agency of International Cooperation (APCI). In total, 24 ministers from the Peruvian government took part in the ceremony.



President Alan Garcia kicked off the official ceremony for the opening of Peru’s Information Access Center, which will act as an ICT hub and is expected to provide positive benefits to Peruvians. He went on to add that this is a great step in the cooperative partnership between the two countries.



Specifically, NIA President Kim met with Peru’s Transportation Minister, Enrique Cornejo Ramirez, and other officers from APCI and the Minister's Office under the e-government for a series of meetings to discuss Peru's National Information sector and how Korea's advanced experience can be utilized and transferred in order to cooperate on a variety of exchanges.



Ramirez mentioned that collaboration through the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) has allowed for Information Diffusion through the Peruvian plan and Peru is showing a great interest in the Korean model of e-government with intentions of benchmarking it in order to upgrade Peru’s own e-government system.



Information Access Centers (IACs) are overseen by MOPAS and the administration is executed by NIA offer an infrastructure with better access and more opportunities to use ICTs for the general public in developing countries. Information literacy education is improved and upgraded all in an effort to bridge the digital divide. With the latest IAC opening in Peru, there are now IACs in 22 countries in total. The IAC in Peru was initiated in November of last year, when Korea President, Lee Myung-bak visited President Garcia, at the Peruvian National Informatization Cooperation Summit where he pledged follow-up action to the ICT areas discussed.
