On August 31, 2011, the Honourable Nick Greiner AC visited NIA while in Korea as he learns more about Korea || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s IT sector and in particular - Korea || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s strong and robust IT infrastructure. Joining the Honourable Greiner was Mr. Tony Kim, Vertical Manager, IBSG - Cisco. The delegation was greeted by NIA officials, including NIA president, Dr. Seang-Tae Kim and Mr. Yong-il Kwon, Executive Director of NIA || chr(39) || || chr(39) || sInformation Resource Division.
Nick Greiner was Premier and Treasurer of New South Wales from 1988-1992 and is currently Chairman of Bradken, The Nuance Group, QBE Lenders || chr(39) || || chr(39) || Mortgage Insurance, Blue Star Print Group and Playup; Deputy Chairman of CHAMP Private Equity; and a Director of Accolade Wines. In June 2011 he was appointed as Chairman of Infrastructure NSW. He is also a member of the Federal Government || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s Review of GST Distribution Committee.
After a brief introduction of NIA and the organization || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s various activities, some of the topics and direction of the discussions that NIA president Seang-Tae Kim brought up included explaining Korea || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s investment in infrastructure and how there is a new paradigm that has shifted to a Smart Society and Smart Government and President Kim || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s own coined term combining || chr(39) || || chr(39) || smart || chr(39) || || chr(39) || and || chr(39) || || chr(39) || citizen || chr(39) || || chr(39) || to make, Smartizens. Building up network infrastructure and the IT industry in general helped to build up Korea || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s digital economy as far as employment and business and market penetration were concerned. Mr. Greiner paid close attention to not only the positive aspects of Korea || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s IT industry
but also some of challenges that not only Korea faces but other countries such as his own Australia (ageing society, regulatory framework, privacy, etc…).
Korea || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s e-government best practices were discussed as well as Smart Work and trying to change society || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s perception and working culture. Mr. Greiner mentioned the situation in Australia as there is an ongoing debate on how much the Australian government should bear the cost of deploying network infrastructure as citizens and the general public see the need for it but there is a fine line of how much the deployment is financial supported by the public sector and how much should be supported by the private sector.
In conclusion, the meeting was very informative for both sides as both were able to learn a little more of the situation in Australia and Korea with both Mr. Greiner and NIA President Kim mentioning that should either side need more
information, they could easily contact each other in the future and this meeting was a good first step to a more fruitful and collaborative relationship.
