NIA dispatched 612 KIV(Korea IT Volunteers) members to 22 developing countries from July 11 to September 4 this year. As a member of World Friends Korea (WFK), the integrated Korean abroad volunteer corps, KIV is a IT specialized volunteer group which dispatched 4,056 volunteers since 2001.

The KIV consists of university students, professors, and IT professionals and they are dispatched to educational institutions, government, and public authorities, etc. in developing countries. KIV || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s activities are focused on IT training and co-working in IT project to improve the IT capacity of the developing countries.

The environments of volunteering in these countries are very poor and the life styles of the countries are very different from that in Korea. For example, in the period of Ramadan in Muslim countries(Indonesia or Morocco), KIV members should fast during daytime alike local people. And they should endure electric power limit in Nepal. They can use electric power only 3 hours a day.

This year, some KIV members dispatched to Vietnam and Philippines were given special missions. It is to visit local family house of the brides married to Korean bridegrooms And the main purpose of the visiting is to check and install refurbished green PC donated by Korean Government and household’s network situation, and to train the family members how to use video chatting program with their daughters living in Korea.

Korean Government(Ministry of Public Administration and Security) and NIA run the program to support foreign brides to meet their family members using PC and internet. Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, and Mongolia are the countries where the majority of foreign brides originate from. In addition to this video chatting, Korean government is also running various social programs such as training and

social events for the foreign brides to easily adopt Korean society.

Jang Byul, the leader of Soul-KIT team dispatched to Vietnam as a member of KIV team, expressed his feelings like this after visiting local family house, IT technology has a cold side in itself, on the other hand IT technology can give a warm heart to people when it is used like this. And that was the most worthwhile moment in Vietnam.
