On Tuesday, October 25, 2011, NIA President Seang-Tae Kim held two separate bilateral meetings with ICT Ministers from 2 African countries - Nigeria and Algeria.
On the side of the ITU World Telecom 2011 event held in Geneva, many government telecommunication high-level officials, including Ministers, Vice Ministers attended the 5-day event. At the request of both Nigeria and Algeria, NIA President Kim held a meeting first with Nigeria where he met Mrs. Omobola
Johnson, Minister of Communication Technology of Nigeria.
The Nigerian Ministry of Communication Technology was just newly formed in July of this year in response to calls made by various stakeholders for better coordination of governance of the Nigerian ICT sector. The Nigeria Ministry of Communication and Technology is tasked with creating and implementing forward looking policies developed in partnership with all sector stakeholders,
and is designed to create an increasingly vibrant and robust ICT industry in Nigeria.
During the meeting, the newly appointed Minister mentioned that Nigeria and the Nigerian government think very highly of the Korea and its related ICT policies and experiences and hopes there are some areas that they may be able to cooperate in the future between the two countries.
After the Nigeria bilateral meeting finished, NIA President Kim held a meeting with the Minister of Telecommunications of Algeria. Algeria had already been aware of Korea || chr(39) || || chr(39) || s ICT cooperation initiatives and have had some experience in the recent past with KADO (which has merged together with NIA under the current presidential administration), as Algerian government officials have participated in public official training programs offered by KADO in the past.
The Telecommunication Minister stated that Algeria has a specific interest to cooperate in the future with Korea in the area of e-government and a possibility of cooperation in operating an e-government standard framework center.
In conclusion, both bilateral meetings were successful in forming ties between NIA and both Nigeria and Algeria and will lead to further ICT cooperation in the future.
