Information Access Center Open (IAC) Opens in Kiev, Ukraine in Early March

On March 2nd, 2012, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security(MOPAS) and the National Information Society Agency(NIA) held an official inauguration ceremony for the opening of the new Ukraine-Korea Information Access Center(IAC) in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital.



The new Ukraine-Korea IAC is ahead of previously set schedule for its opening and will be established in the Open International University of Human Development "Ukraine" which is a non-profit, non-state higher education institutionthat was established in 1998. The new Information Access Center in Ukraine provides access to Internet as well as includes an Internet lounge for local residents to use for ICT education purposes and a seminar room to host both domestic and international events. Hardware, computer and video-conferencing equipment are also provided by the Korean government.



The opening ceremony was attended by Kwang-soo JANG, Head of Informatization Strategy Office of MOPAS, Petro M. Talanchuk, Chancellor and President of the Open International University of Human Development "Ukraine" as well as other High-level Officials from the Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure and other political assemblymen with approximately 150 people in attendance.



Mr. JANG and High-level Officials of Ukraine government held meetings concerning further IT cooperative projects between Korea and Ukraine such as Korean Internet Volunteers (KIV) and Korea Information Learning (KoIL) programs in order to share experiences regarding informatization building experiences of Korea with Ukraine.



In conclusion, MOPAS and NIA are satisfied that an IAC is now established in the Ukraine and more plans are being finalized to establish Information Access Centers(IACs) in Ghana, Panama, Vietnam, Colombia, Moldova and Myanmar, respectively. In total, there will be 34 IACs in operation by the end of this year, which will go a long way in helping to bridge the digital divide in developing countries with different information communication technologies.
